'Seussical' actor Anthony Romeo a nice fit in JoJo role

'Seussical' actor Anthony Romeo a nice fit in JoJo role By Sue Merrell | The Grand Rapids Press January 27, 2010, 7:10AM

GRAND RAPIDS — Anthony Romeo didn’t grow up reading Dr. Seuss, because his mother didn’t think the made-up words would be good for him. No “Cat in the Hat” or “Horton Hears a Who” or “Green Eggs and Ham.”

Then, in middle school, he discovered “The Lorax” and went back and read all the books he’d missed.

“When I was in seventh grade, I was reading books meant for little kids, but I loved them,” Romeo said in a recent phone interview from New York. “There’s so much to these stories.”

Romeo is sharing his love of Dr. Seuss with Grand Rapids this week as a member of the Theatreworks USA production of “Seussical.” Circle Presents brought in the touring musical for four sold-out school shows today and Thursday. The run continues with public performances Friday and Saturday.

Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat

The Learning Company

List Price: $14.99

Product Description

The Cat In The Hat comes to life in your house! You can follow along as the story is read, or click on the objects and play games instead.
It's a beloved children's classic in a brand-new format, and kids are sure to love all the new music, games, and creative activities on this CD. Throughout the software, The Cat in the Hat is read aloud by a narrator, and children are presented with two choices: follow along with the story or play with the games and clickables hidden on every page.

Games are designed simply, and preschoolers will be able to master them without much difficulty (older children may find them a bit too easy to bother with repeat play). Throughout the story narration, early readers will benefit from seeing the highlighted words on each page--they're repeated frequently. It's a great way to foster word recognition.

This software also teaches toddlers how to get the hang of using a mouse. They're encouraged to turn "pages" by clicking on the Cat's glove icon; they'll find this action easy and instantly gratifying, since kids can click anywhere in the vicinity and still receive hilarious results.

Who knows, maybe helping the Cat with the Clean-Up Machine will inspire your little ones to put their own toys away! --Jill Lightner
